We caught up with a few of the most influential people in performance marketing at Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas. The influencers shared their valuable insight about who they view as their biggest influencers, their predictions for 2014, and why affiliates and advertisers should attend Affiliate Summit events. Get the inside scoop from some of the industry’s brightest.
Who influences you and why?
Some of the people that influence me are John Jantsch from Duct Tape Marketing. Seth Godin, of course, I like to read his blog. Gary Vaynerchuk is another one. And then just new affiliates who are experiencing what I experienced 10 years ago for the first time. I find their blogs very insightful and interesting.
I would have to say that Eric Nagel probably influences me the most because I love reading everything he writes. He does everything from affiliate marketing to programming to list building.
I would say, for influencers in the industry, definitely Tricia Meyer is my biggest influencer. We started in a mastermind group, have become business partners, and are great friends now. We actually spent some time at Disney together, so she’s the one.
The people that I normally follow and go to for advice and content are probably Rae Hoffman (Sugarrae), Dennis Yu from BlitzMetrics, and Wil Reynolds from SEER Interactive.
I’m influenced by the top usability people in the field. I studied with Don Norman at UCSD and Steve Krug is the godfather of web usability. Those are my influencers.
I think the person that influences me the most in the affiliate community is Missy Ward because she’s somebody that not only makes bank, but makes sure that she uses her fame and fortune to help others.
What is your prediction for performance marketing in 2014?
The biggest opportunity in 2014 is mobile. Everybody here seems to be very excited about what’s going on in mobile – the traffic growth and the offers that are finally being made available on mobile.
You know what’s the one thing that’s in everybody’s hands within an arm’s reach of them for almost all of their lives? That’s the phone and that’s the future of everything that’s going to happen in technology.
In 2014, I’m really excited to see more of the attribution tools coming in and I have a huge influx of new bloggers and energetic affiliates going through. I’m just really excited about the new tools that are coming out.
Mobile. Mobile is here, but mobile isn’t responsive. We think responsive is going to be too unwieldy, so create separate templates for your mobile and your web.
More than anything this year, I’m looking forward to strategic partnerships with other affiliates. I think too often we think of each other as competitors when actually we have a lot to learn from each other and can work together to be successful.
I think in 2014 in the affiliate space, we’re going to see a shrinking of the middle class. We’ll see the big affiliates getting bigger and either small affiliates getting smaller or eaten up by the big ones.
Why should people attend Affiliate Summit events?
I attend affiliate summit for the networking. I find the people here are high caliber. They bring a lot of interesting information to the table and I tend to find I get a lot of value from that.
Affiliate Summit is the one place that I can come and network with everybody that I need to work with – the merchants, the affiliates, the OPMs. It’s everybody I need to work with all in one place.
I attend Affiliate Summit for the relationships. There are relationships that I started years ago at previous Affiliate Summits and they’ve just strengthened throughout the years into good friends and business opportunities.
You should attend Affiliate Summit because it’s the best place to learn about and get relationships with people that you’re going to do business with for the next 20 to 30 years and it’s just a heck of a lot of fun, too.
I would recommend that any affiliate attend Affiliate Summit because you cannot replace the live networking and connections that you make here.
I’ve been coming to Affiliate Summit for many years to learn, to network with people, and of course to attend the infamous after parties. Last man standing!
